Ayanna Witter-Johnson – Extraordinary music power!

As promised it’s time to reveal the second name on my top five of ,non mainstream, favorite musicians of the moment. The next lady I want you to meet listens to the beautiful name Ayanna Witter-Johnson, and to say that she’s a young musical powerhouse would honestly be a bit of understatement. The young vocalist, cellist, piano player and composer from London already has a long list of awards and accomplishments. After graduating from Trinity Laban Conservatory of Music and Dance with a First Class Degree in Classical Composition and winning the Trinity Laban Silver Award, she became an Emerging Artist in Residence (EAR) at London’s Southbank Centre under the guidance of Nitin Sawhney, She sailed the seven seas for a while and docked in New York City in 2009. The following year she became the only non-American to win Amateur Night Live at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem, NYC and in 2011, having won the Edward and the Sally Van Lier Fund Scholarship, She completed a Masters of Music in Composition at the Manhattan School of Music.

Returning to the UK, she recorded her debut EP Truthfully and after supporting both Natty and Roberto Fonseca on their UK tours she was then nominated for her first MOBO Award in 2012.

When asked to define her style in interviews, Ayanna usually sums up a long list of influences. Like many moder musicians she mixes: Soul, blues, classical and elements from many other styles into something truly her own. Her great compositions combined with a very strong stage performance makes this of my absolute favorites. I hope one day she will get a lot more press in the Netherlands.

Enjoy some of her music videos below and share this name with your friends!
