Cafe ‘t Sluisje – A hidden cozy place where Amsterdam and waterland meet!

If you know where to take a right turn, and follow a certain long and narrow street, you’ll suddenly find yourself in a very different type of Amsterdam. An Amsterdam many people never even knew existed. In the space where the city and back country (known as waterland) meet, there is a true hidden gem to be found. From one moment to the next you feel you’ve left the city behind and you’re in a smart rural town. The streets become narrow, the houses became large and are often adorned with large but graceful wooden facades. The cool thing is, your not out of town at all!. Your still in Amsterdam and in the midst of this beautiful place you’ll encounter cafe t’ Sluisje. Over a 100 years old and situated on the side of one of the oldest still working water-gates of the area, Cafe ‘t Sluisje is a one of those spots where time seems to have frozen.

The cafe is still owned by the same family that started it over a 100 years ago and you can feelthe histroy in this place everywhere. The staff is also very friendly. While you’re enjoying some coffee or a nice sandwich on the sunny terrace overlooking the small yacht harbor, you’ll see small boats coming and going through the water-gate. It’s truly a joy to watch since this small gate is still operated entirely by hand. Boaters have to disembark and then manually operate the gate, raising the waterlevel, and then opening the gate on the other side to be able to sail through.

If some rest and tranquility is what your looking for. Go exploring and try to find this wonderful place 😉
